Coach Missy Johnson knows one thing for sure. All eyes in the Mad River Division of the CBC will be on her Northwestern Warriors as they gear up for what is likely going to be another successful season this year.

After advancing to their second consecutive regional semi-final game, the Warriors return eight key players from their run last season. She knows the pressure will be a bit higher this year, but she welcomes it.

“We have eight everyday starters back and all nine of our returning kids played every game,” Johnson said. “We have high expectations every year. The girls have the mindset of winning our side of the CBC and going further in the tournament as well.”

“Maturity if the big thing, my juniors and seniors have been to the last two regionals, and the sophomores were there last year as freshman,” she said. “That will benefit us this year.”

The Warriors lost to Granville in the regional finals in 2015, the team who won the state championship.

“They feel more comfortable on the field this year,” Johnson said. “Every day they are going 110% and are very focused on whatever we do.”

Returning are three seniors, including Taj Kniceley, who will start at third base.

“She is a four year starter and has become a vocal leader of the team,” Johnson said. Also back are a pair of seniors in contention for an outfield spot; Jescena Risner and Makenzie Bost.

“Jescena does a good job pushing her teammates and helping with the underclassmen,” the coach said. “Makenzie sacrifices her body out on the field more than anyone I know. She has improved tremendously and is battling for a spot.”

Junior Abby Zerkle returns as the second baseman, and she continues to improve at the plate according to Johnson.

“She will give you 110% and will make the great plays at second,” she said. Another pair of juniors will battle for positions, including Rachel Martin and Maddie Current.

On the mound will be sophomore Jenna Robbins, their top pitcher.

“She has control of all of her pitches and will keep you on your toes,” Johnson said. “Having a year under her belt will pay off this year, her nerves will be gone.”

Also returning is starting first baseball Macie Crew, who returns from an ACL injury and hopes to get back behind the plate at some point.

“She is working hard to get back, and learning the first base position and working daily.”

Jamie Rutherford returns as the shortstop, and has worked hard according to Johnson to strengthen that position.

Freshmen on the roster includes Miranda Gillman, McKayla Howard and Bry White.

Northwestern opens the season at Newton on March 26 in a doubleheader.
