The folks at Donnel’s Creek Church of the Brethren will host the annual Strawberry Social this weekend, continuing a tradition started way back in 1952. The event serves as an outreach program for the church, as the community is invited to join them for a car cruise-in and good food, including lots of strawberries.

The event began 64 years ago in June of 1952, when the church served hot chicken sandwiches made from a flock of bantams donated by a church member. It rained that year, forcing the party inside to the church’s basement, where the event was held until 1969 when a new fellowship hall and kitchen were constructed.

This year, the Strawberry Social will feature foods like ham, chicken, brats, hot dogs, and plenty of homemade desserts crafted with love by church volunteers. A few years ago, the car show and cruise-in were added, featuring lots of classic and remarkable automobiles. Dick “The Hot Dog” Ryman is also set to DJ.

Church members say the event is designed by the Evangelism Board in attempt to provide an enjoyable afternoon with music, cars, and a great meal.

The Strawberry Social will be held this Saturday, June 11 at the Donnel’s Creek Church of the Brethren, 6562 Detrick-Jordan Pike. Food is served from 4:30 to 7 p.m., and the cruise-in lasts from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Call the church at 964-8032 for more information.
