Services provided by Waste Management was the major topic of discussion at the last New Carlisle City Council meeting.
Resident Ron Cobb started the discussions when he complained about the service that he has received in his neighborhood.
“They didn’t pick up the trash until nearly 8:00 p.m. yesterday [January 3],” said Cobb. “Something needs to be done or we need to run them out of the city and get someone else.”
He also said that trash on Clay St. was not picked up at all on Monday.
Mayor Mike Lowrey stated that the new contract with Waste Management is a change to the entire trash collection structure, and assured Cobb that progress would be made after a meeting with Waste Management officials scheduled for January 10.
“If we don’t see considerable improvement within a few weeks, we need to dump the contract.”
Resident Jennifer Thornberry also addressed council, stating that their Waste Management driver was respectful. “When he left the route and other people took it, service has gone downhill.”
Thornberry said that some trash will fall out when being loaded onto the truck and that it files out of the truck. “They won’t pick up their mess,” she said.
She also complained that the drivers won’t pick up trash outside of the bin.
City Manager Randy Bridge answered her complaints. “All trash must be in a container with the lid on,” said Bridge. “This is for sanitary reasons.”
Bridge continued saying that animals can easily get into plastic bags, but usually cannot get into a trash can with a lid.
“We have a very good trash contract,” said Bridge. “Prices are very reasonable. Seniors only pay $9 per month.”
Bridge also informed Council that water bills are normally due on January 16. Since that is a legal holiday, water bills will be due on January 17.
The next meeting of the New Carlisle City Council will be held on Tuesday, January 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Smith Park Shelter House. The public is invited to attend.
