Every team in the area had to deal with an altered schedule last week due to the holidays, but for the Bethel boys’ basketball team, they just kept their solid season going.

The Bees came out fast and built a huge lead in the opening period, never looking back in a 97-56 rout of former regional finalist Yellow Springs at the Hive.

Caleb South led the way for Bethel with a game high 29 points, while Ryan Rose added 15, Jacob Nickell scored 12 and Ian Anderson contributed 11.

“We are still trying to put together four solid quarters and come out fast,” said Bethel coach Brett Kopp. “Tonight we did a great job sharing the ball. I know Caleb had 29 with three others in double figures. That’s what it’s about, sharing the ball.”

Even with the holiday break, Kopp was not concerned about the break.

“You could tell by Wednesday the kids were ready to go against someone else,” Kopp said. “This is a group who just wants to compete in anything. It gets heated in practice because they get after it. We have a stretch of five games in 11 days which will be good for us.”

All five of the starters scored before the four minute mark of the first quarter, as Bethel built a 17-2 lead with 4:54 left in the first period. The Bees increased on their lead with a big three at the two minute mark, and Bethel had already put the game out of reach, leading 25-7.

After capping off a 30-point opening period, the Bees continued to separate themselves. South put together six quick points in a minute to take the Bees lead to 37-13 with 5:39 left in the half.

“We have a bunch of shooters around the perimeter and as long as the focus is to make the right play, we will be pretty good,” Kopp said of his balanced scoring.

Rose hit a midrange jumper and later buried a three to take their lead out to 48-19, and even after a challenge in the final two minutes of the half by Yellow Springs where they outscored the Bees 8-3, the game was out of reach as Bethel led 55-27 at the break.

Bethel Girls Basketball- the Bees fell to league-leading Tri Village last week 75-31, as the Patriots jumped out to an 18-0 lead to state the game and never looked back.

Alaina Hawthorn led the way for the Bees with 11 points, while nobody else scored more than four points in the loss.

The Bees return to action tomorrow night hosting Ansonia at 7 p.m.
