As the post season approaches, the Northwestern girls’ basketball team is picking up some momentum, after winning three of four games last week to climb into third place overall in the CBC Mad River Division, and they doubled their number of wins this season with the latest run.

They opened the week with a 65-51 win over Urbana, after jumping out to a fast lead in the opening period. The Warriors scored 20 points in the opening quarter, and took a 36-16 lead into the half.

After watching Urbana battle back to win the third period and cut into the Warriors lead, the host squad held on for the win.

Abby Zerkle led all scorers with 40 points, while Rachel Martin added 10 in the win.

It was Zerkle who came back two days later and topped her performance with a 42-point explosion as Northwestern defeated Northeastern 62-51. Zerkle added 12 rebounds in the win, as Northwestern led 19-8 after the opening period, then battled the rest of the way.

Northwestern led 32-22 at the half, and held on as the Jets played even the rest of the way.

Zerkle was 14-28 from the field and 12-15 from the line. Kyndall Berner added eight points in the win for the Warriors.

On Thursday, the Warriors played even with Bellefontaine in the opening half, and held the Chiefs to 10 points in the second half as they went on to a 40-28 victory over the Chiefs.

Zerkle again led the way for the Warriors, but her offense was held in check by the Chiefs, scoring 13 points to lead the way. Miranda Gillman also reached double figures for Northwestern with 10 points and Rachel White scored eight.

*The Warriors finished out the week with a non-conference loss to Newton 44-30, as the Warriors struggled to score.

Leading the way for the Warriors again was Zerkle, as the senior put up 16 points in the loss. Tatum McBride led the Indians also with 16 points.

Northwestern dropped to 6-13 on the season, and sits 4-7 in the CBC.

Northwestern closes out the regular season this week, as they hosted Ben Logan earlier in the week, then travel to Indian Lake tonight for their final CBC game of the season, and host Miami East on Saturday night at 7:30.
