As the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, the Tecumseh Arrows limped back to their bench trailing by 14 points against the defending state champion Alter Knights. The Knights had just went on a 12-0 run, and the fans at this girls’ basketball game were witnessing the visiting team from Kettering running like a fine tuned machine.

But the Arrows didn’t walk away. They played closer to even for most of the final three quarters, and Tecumseh made sure the defending champs knew they were in a game, before Alter finished with a 66-52 win over the Arrows.

Tecumseh didn’t shoot poorly, hitting over 47 percent of their shots from the field as Corinne Thomas led the Arrows with 18 points and four assists while Presley Griffitts added 17 points and seven assists.

They were the only two players in double figures, as Allison Berner added nine for the Arrows.

Braxtin Miller led Alter with 22 points, while Libby Bazelak added 14. Miller is headed to Oklahoma State and Bazelak is headed to Duquesne.

Alter jumped in front early as Olivia Gillis buried a long three pointer to give them a 5-2 lead, but the Arrows didn’t quit. Berner scored around the rim and Griffitts added a floater to cut into the Knights lead to 7-4 with 4:52 left in the opening quarter.

Alter then took over for a few minutes reeling off 12 straight, including a pair of three’s from Gillis including one that put Alter up 19-6 with 1:34 left in the quarter. Thomas finally broke up the string with a drive and pair of free throws with 1:26 left in the period. She came back with another pair of free tosses to bring their deficit to 12. Alter scored in the final second of the quarter and took a 24-10 lead after one.

Tecumseh began their task to try to get the lead down into single digits heading into the half, but Alter hit a long three to begin the second period to take their lead out to 17. Griffitts was the hot hand for the Arrows in the second, scoring seven points in about three minutes, and with 3:35 left Tecumseh only trailed 32-22.

The Arrows still trailed by 13 at the half, dropping only their second game of the season as they head into the stretch of the season where they look to wrap up the conference title and keep some momentum headed into the post-season.

Tecumseh also defeated Shawnee 62-42 as Thomas led the way with 31 points, while Griffitts added 11 and Macy Berner scored eight.

*The sectional tournament draw is held Sunday, Feb. 5 with sectionals beginning the next week.
