For the first ten minutes of the game, the Tecumseh boys’ basketball team were trading baskets with host Urbana, setting up what was hoping to be a good battle all night at Urbana High School.

Then, a big five minute run by Urbana would eventually force Tecumseh to play catch-up all night.

The Hillclimbers put together a 16-point run in the second period to explode out to a comfortable halftime lead, and held on as the Arrows battled to the within one possession late as they defeated Tecumseh 56-47 on a bone-chilling drive to Urbana on Friday night.

Both teams traded baskets early, as there were six lead changes in the opening period, with the Arrows taking the biggest lead in the first quarter at four when Clay Mastin gave the Arrows a one-point lead with a layup at the 5:27 mark, and Michael Green busted a three to push their lead to 9-5.

With the Hillclimbers enjoying a slim 10-9 lead after one period, both teams exchanged baskets until the game was tied at 13 with 6:20 left in the half. That’s when the Arrows offense went colder than the weather as Jace Underwood took over the game for Urbana, The junior guard scored 11 points over the next three minutes, part of a 16-0 run for the Climbers, and before Tecumseh knew it, they were staring at a 29-13 deficit with less than two minutes left in the half.

A huge three at the buzzer for Urbana sent the host team into the locker room at the half leading 39-18.

Tecumseh continued to battle, as Drew Sarihan put the Arrows on his back for the next eight minutes. The sophomore hit four consecutive three’s for the Arrows, as he cut into an 18-point deficit and Tecumseh only trailed 46-35 heading into the fourth period.

Urbana was still holding onto a double digit lead with 3:13 left when the Arrows had one more run in them, while holding Urbana scoreless for nearly three minutes.

Ross Warren scored at the rim, and thanks to a pair of misses one-and-ones from Urbana, it allowed a near comeback for the Arrows.

Reid Hale buried consecutive threes in the final minute, cutting the Urbana lead to 50-47 and the Arrows were within one possession. Urbana then iced the game with six consecutive free throws in the final 40 seconds.

Tecumseh was led in scoring by Sarihan with 12 points, Hale added 10, Mastin scored nine, while each scoring eight was Warren and Green.

After traveling to Indian Lake last night, Tecumseh hosts Bellefontaine on Friday night, their only game this coming weekend.
