Their rivalry on the soccer field goes back a long way, and when they battle, it is usually a very competitive 80 minutes of action.

Last week was no different, as Greenon hosted Tecumseh in a CBC girls’ soccer match, and after building a two-goal lead in the second half, the Knights withstood a late threat from the Arrows to escape for the 3-2 victory.

“It was exciting to come out with the big win tonight,” said Greenon coach Jamie Wiggins. “The seniors played really smart tonight that led us to the win tonight.”

Greenon scored first just 90 second into the game when Andrea Leciejewski took a pass from Madeline Wade and slipped it past the Arrows keeper Abby Adams, giving the Knights a quick 1-0 lead.

After nearing scoring again a few minutes later, the Knights watched as Tecumseh fought back to even the score.

Abbey Partlow hit a big cross to Jasmine Hassell for the Arrows score, making it 1-1.

While both teams had their chances to take the lead, Greenon finally broke the tie when Claire Wilson headed the ball in off a pass from Julia Valley with 11:56 left in the half, giving the Knights a 2-1 lead at the half.

The Knights added to their lead midway through the second half when Kaliyah Fulton scored against Adams to push the Knights lead out to 3-1.

Tecumseh closed the gap three minutes later as Hailey Beel scored in the box, giving the Arrows a chance at the comeback.

Both teams missed chances late in the game, as Delaney Benedict just missed putting the game away as her shot went off the right post, and with less than two minutes left, Hassell had a game-tying attempt for the Arrows that was saved by Ally Whitaker, preserving the win for Greenon.

“When you talk about Kaliyah, she has had a goal or an assist nearly every night, having one against Tecumseh,” Wiggins said. “Big players make the big plays in big games. Also Bailey Benedict also did a great job defensively for us tonight. It was a big night for the seniors.”

Tecumseh coach Craig Lindsey

“The girls came out and played hard,” Lindsey said. “We recovered from the early goal to tie the game, and we had a couple of opportunities and couldn’t take advantage of them.”

“I am proud of their fight tonight, and hopefully we can learn from this.”

Greenon goes to 8-3 overall and sits second in the Mad River Division, while Tecumseh falls to 6-4-3 overall.

*In the boys’ game, the Arrows won a 4-3 battle against the Knights, to remain atop of the Kenton Trail Division.

Scoring for the Arrows was Alex Arevalos with two goals, along with one each from Kevin Alvarado, Mitchell Foland, Enrique Ruiz and Kenyon Runner. Assists came from Ruiz, Runner and Brandon Thomas.

For the Knights, they had goals from Chris Baird, Owen Leathley, Cameron Patterson and David Waag, while Waag and Baird also dished out assists.
