Jessica WilsonComing off of a 14-win season last spring, the Tecumseh softball team is hoping that a combination of solid pitching, experienced seniors and a solid younger group of players translates into another successful season for the Arrows.

The Arrows open their season next Saturday at Springfield, and coach Christi Leggett knows the pieces are in place for a good year.

“I expect the girls to work hard all season, and compete in the tight games,” Leggett said. “We have a lot of experience coming back from last year, and we only lost two seniors. The girls work well together, and have great attitudes.”

Finishing 14-8 last year was one of the better years in recent memory, and she feels things could improve this year.

“Our goal is to win more games this year,” she said. “The games we lost last year that were close, we expect the girls to come out at the start and take control of those games.”

Four seniors lead the way for the Arrows, including three that are going to play at the next level.

Jessica Wilson will be the primary pitcher, and is one of the top in the conference. She is committed to Ashland and Leggett expects a big year again from Wilson.

“She is a very rounded player with a lot of experience,” the coach said. “She worked hard in the off season and is ready for this season to start.”

Also senior Michaela Pierson will return to play left field, and will head to play at Sinclair next season.

“She needs to have a strong bat for us and move the runners around to score,” Leggett said. “She is a solid outfielder with a strong arm.”

Brooke Barger returns at third base and is a consistent player on the hot corner for the Arrows. Also back is another senior Chrissy Moyer, who is headed to Ohio Christian as a catcher. She is currently out with an injury and is due back at some point.

“This is her fourth year on varsity, third as a catcher,” Leggett said. “She takes charge of the plate and works well with Wilson. She is a big hitter for us.”

Jenny Wright is a key returning junior, as she will pitch and play some second base for the Arrows.

“She is definitely a very solid second baseman and knows the game,” Leggett said.

Other juniors on the roster are Danielle Pride (1B), Rachel Moeller (OF) and Cheyenne Neal (1B/OF).

Returning to play centerfield is sophomore Julia Jones, while Kiersten Means (OF), Carrisa Duff (Utility) and Izzy Fox (IF) also are sophomores on the varsity roster.

Tecumseh has three freshman ready to contribute, including one of the hardest workers that Leggett has ever seen in her program. Ashley Fite will play shortstop and pitch for the Arrows, and the coach is ready to see what she can do.

“She is a great leader as a freshman,” Leggett said. “She comes with excellent skills and is a powerhouse hitter.” Fite is joined by freshman catcher Mackenzie Drews and utility player Nina Smith.
