Northwestern Elementary students were treated to a special “Rocket Day” on Friday courtesy of Team Ohio Rocketry.

The day began with a two-and-a-half-hour lesson on space history and physics. Team Ohio Rocketry then supplied the students with kits for making their own, small rocket. The rocket kits are paid for by the students and, with the help of the high school physics class, the students assemble them as well.

According to Team Ohio Rocketry founder Steve Temple, the hope is to encourage and inspire the children to pursue sciences and aviation.

Northwestern’s Rocket Day began 12 years ago when Terry Temple was a student in Mrs. Spencer’s 2nd grade class. “Terry was always drawing rockets and writing stories about rockets” said Mrs. Spencer. “Finally, I called Steve to schedule a demo.”

12 years later, Mrs. Spencer noted that the event is especially interesting as the High School Physics class is comprised of students whom participated in Rocket Day as 2nd graders.

It’s a fun day for all of the students according to Mrs. Spencer. When she asked the first grade students what they thought of Rocket Day, the overwhelming response was “we can’t wait to be second graders.”

“I’ll keep coming back as long as they ask me” said Steve Temple. “This is fun, but it’s exhausting. It’s like having a constant adrenaline rush for 8 hours.”
