Medway Cleaners Closing

A long-time Medway business has closed and is selling off their equipment.

Last week, Rollins Moving picked up Medway Cleaners’ dry-cleaning machine to ship it to a purchaser in Africa.

“The EPA wouldn’t let us sell it to anyone in this country,” said owner Sue Benfield. “We heard from a guy in Tanzania and he paid cash for it and paid the shipping.”

Benfield said that the purchaser operates a laundry business and is expanding into dry cleaning. He told her that he had been outsourcing his dry cleaning work, and believed he had enough business to make the purchase worthwhile.

Medway Cleaners Closing 2“I checked out his city on the internet, and its a pretty big city,” she said. “It’s not what you would expect in Africa.”

The equipment weighs between 3000 and 4000 pounds.

“We’ve moved bigger things than this,” said Jerry Heard, Sales & Marketing Director for Rollins. “We don’t often work in such close quarters, though.” Rollins crews had to move the equipment out a back door and through a side yard to get to the street.

“We’ll truck it to a rail yard and it will go by rail to the coast,” said Heard. “Then it will be loaded onto a ship bound for Tanzania.” He said it would take 2-3 weeks to get to its destination.
