With the weather finally breaking for area teams, a Central Buckeye Conference matchup was held last week as Northwestern battled Greenon in a key baseball game in Springfield.

The Warriors (4-3) scored four times in the fourth inning to open a close game, as went on to defeat Greenon 12-1.

“We hit the ball a ton right at people tonight, and they had a lot of errors,” said Northwestern coach Todd Houseman. “We scored 12 runs on only six hits.”

Greenon scored to open the game, as Adam Campbell crossed the plate to give the Knights the early lead on the Warriors.

Northwestern came back and quickly tied the game in their half of the first, as Cole Baldwin reached on an error, and stole second. Gage Vorhees then ripped a double to score Baldwin, tying the game after each teams’ first at bat.

After a scoreless second, the Warriors took the lead in the third. Baldwin reached on another error, moved to second on a flyout and scored when Brewer doubled giving Northwestern a 2-1 lead.

Northwestern came up and took control of the game in the fourth inning. Baldwin and Spencer Rinaldi both walked, and Brewer lined another double to score both runs, giving the Warriors a 4-1 lead. Tanner White reached on an error, moved up on a stolen base and Christian Highfield doubled to score White for the fifth run for the Warriors.

Highfield stole third base, and when Baldwin reached on an infield error to score Highfield and make it 6-1 heading to the fifth.

Another run crossed the plate in the fifth when Highfield reached on an error, Dalton Lee walked and Baldwin reached on an error to load the bases. Rinaldi hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1.

The Warriors came up big in the sixth inning that finished the contest in a run rule. Brewer reached on a single in the sixth, then Jake Parks reached on a hit by pitch, and Cody Briggs then reached on a fielders choice. JD McMahan then walked and Highfield hit a sacrifice fly to score a run. Lee walked and Baldwin drove in another run by reaching on an error. Vorhees then doubles to clear the bases, giving the Warriors the win.

Vorhees pitched a complete game three-hitter, striking out three and walked none. Greenon’s starting pitcher was Chris Winter.

“I am happy how we have played,” Houseman said. “We lost two heartbreakers to Ben Logan 2-1 and 5-4, and we had several chances in each of those games with multiple guys on base and couldn’t put the ball in play.”

“It stings with so many chances. We have played well enough to be 6-1, and the guys did a great job bouncing back tonight, and everything is possible right now.”

“If we play within two errors or less, we can play with anyone,” Greenon coach Dan Young said. “The kids aren’t giving up and I am proud of them for that.”

Winter and Adam Campbell had multiple hits in that game for the Knights.

Also last week, Greenon lost to Bellefontaine 8-6 to drop their record to 5-6.
