DSC 0253The Bethel Bees now move into third place in the Cross Country Conference with Friday night’s win over Covington Buccs 53-45.

The Bees improve to 5-2 in the CCC and are 11-3 overall this season.

Bees head coach Brett Kopp talks about the importance of Friday’s win.

“It was a big matchup because Covington and we were tied for third in the league. We want to win the league first and that’s a big step in that direction. Then, you have seeding coming up in two weeks and we’re trying to get the best record and best seed. This was a huge game because Covington has a good program and a good coach.”

He goes on to talk about his team’s effort.

“We haven’t been there where we played all 32 minutes as hard as we can but we’re starting strong and finishing strong. We just have to get the gaps a little better. My kids always play hard, now we’re just getting them to practice and play hard.”

In the first quarter, the Bees were off to a fantastic start with stellar play from sophomore point guard Caleb South, who took command on both sides of the court.

South scored 11 of the Bees 18 first quarter points and that was not the end of him.

The Bees were up 18-8 at the end of the first.

Heading into the second quarter, the Bees started to pull away from the Buccs.

Junior guard Nate Rimkus stepped up big and scores the Bees only seven points in the quarter.

The Buccs continued to fight and put up points and were down by five points going into halftime.

The Bees are up 25-20 going into halftime.

Coming out of halftime, the Bees remanded dominant and so did Caleb South as the Buccs could not dial up anything to stop him.

He scored eight of the Bees 11 fourth quarter points along with a few rebounds.

The Bees were only up 36-32 going into the final quarter giving the Bees the opportunity to make a comeback.

The Bees went up by as many as 12 points, making it difficult for the Buccs to retaliate.

The Bees go on to win this one 53-45.

Caleb South scored a game-high 24 points along with five assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Jacob Evans scored 11 points Nick Rimkus scored seven points.

Coach Kopp praises Caleb South saying, “He’s a good basketball player and he works hard at it. He is maturing on both ends of the floor. I’m pretty demanding on him but he’s getting better which as a sophomore you’re scoring 20 points a game and you’re still getting better!”

Next Friday, the Bees will stay home as they prepare for Ansonia, who are 2-12 this season.

Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
