Caleb South scored 24 points to lead three players in double figures, as the Bethel Bees boys’ basketball team won their fourth consecutive game to start the season, with a 64-52 victory over Greeneview.
Nate Riumkus added 15 points for the Bees in the win, while Evan Hawthorn scored 11.
It wasn’t our best game but we had moments,” Bethel coach Brett Kopp said. “Our shots weren’t falling but it was good to come up with a win after coming up with adversity during the game.”
South opened the scoring quickly with four points to open the game, but the Rams answered and finished the first quarter trailing the Bees 15-12.
Bethel pushed their lead out to ten when Ian Anderson scored around the rim, and that was their margin headed to the half, with Bethel leading 28-18.
“We’ve got some good athletes and that was the difference,” Kopp said. “Our overall skill and energy at the end pulled us through. It took them a while to figure out what we were doing.”
Jacob Evans added eight for Bethel, while Tyler Terry added four and Christian White scored two.
*Bethel came back and won a hard fought conference game on Friday night, earning a 55-52 victory at Arcanum to capture their fifth win of the season.
“We weren’t focused early on,” Kopp said. “We came out flat and you can’t do that against a team coached by Marcus Bixler.”.
Bethel suffered through early foul trouble, as both South and Hawthorn picked up their second fouls in the first five minutes.
“The other kids came in and stepped up,” Kopp said.
Down the stretch, Christian White had a big fourth quarter, scoring eight of his 13 points in the final eight minutes.
“Caleb also had a good second half, while Ian Anderson and Jacob Evans dominated on the boards,” Kopp said.
South led Bethel with 19 points for the Bees, while White added 13.
*On Saturday night, the Bees traveled to Yellow Springs to battle a veteran squad and came away with their first loss of the season, dropping a 71-64 overtime decision to the Bulldogs.
Yellow Springs scored early, taking an 18-13 lead after the opening period only to see Bethel fight back and enjoy a 32-29 lead at the half.
*Last night, Bethel brought back the 2001 state championship team to be honored by the Bees.
“We are trying to bring back history of Bethel, I always said small town, big tradition,” Kopp said.
