Heading into the post season, Bethel’s girls’ basketball team has showed signs of gaining some momentum with a couple of recent victories.

Coming off of an overtime win against North, the Bees survived a challenge from Cross County Conference foe Twin Valley South for a 49-41 victory over the Panthers. It was their final conference game of the season.

The Bees now head into the Division Four sectional tournament on Saturday, as they battle the fifth-seeded Middletown Madison Mowhawks at 11 a.m. at Franklin Monroe High School. It will be the first of five consecutive games scheduled for FM on Saturday, all Division Three tournament games.

Against South, the Bees trailed by five at the half, before they used a dominant third period to gain the lead and use the momentum to get the win in the final quarter.

Delaney Hardert led the Bees with 14 points, while Sarah Swisher and Becky Schweiterman each added 10. Mylan Crews led the way for South with a game high 17 points.

Bethel jumped in front early 5-0 behind Swisher who hit three free throws and Morgan Crase added a layup.

South battled back to take the lead late in the first period behind the play of Crews, who scored six consecutive points giving the Panthers a 10-9 lead. Alaina Hawthorn ended the quarter giving the Bees the lead with a score at the rim.

Twin Valley South led for most of the second period, as Crews hit a three with 4:08 left in the half to give the Panthers a 21-18 lead and they maintained it for the remainder of the half.

Bethel came out in the third period and controlled the game for most of the period. Morgan Crase scored three points and Swisher added a pair of free throws to tie the game at 29, as the Bees used a 11-0 run to begin the quarter to take a six-point lead.

The Bees continued to control the pace to start the fourth period, as Hardert and Schweiterman added to their lead, pushing the Bethel lead to 39-31.

TVS cut the Bethel lead to 41-35 with 4:18 left, but Schweiterman scored two quick baskets to increase the Bees lead back out to ten.

Again the Panthers cut into the lead late in the game, but Hawthorn and Swisher each hit free throws in the final minute to secure the win for the Bees.
