Every year, the Miami East volleyball team is traditionally one of the strongest overall teams in the area. For the Bethel seniors, they are all too familiar with their conference foes.

As the seniors were honored for their years with the Bees, the Vikings left their mark as the regular season came to an end for Bethel, falling in a straight-set loss 25-7, 25-8, 25-15 in front of an excellent crowd at Bethel High School last week.

Bethel actually came out strong in the first game, jumping out to a 6-2 lead behind strong net play from Klaudia Lowery. The Bees were in control early in the game, before Johnni Parker entered center stage.

Parker, who has already committed to Ohio State for volleyball, stepped up and served 15 consecutive points, including 14 aces. Her high-tossing powerful serve was too much for the Bees to handle, as the Vikings went from trailing by four, to leading 18-6 in what seemed like a few minutes.

Miami East then reeled off six more service points and put the first game away 25-7.

Game two was much of the game, only the Vikings controlled the game early. Kyndall Hellyer reeled off eight straight points to put the Vikings up 8-0, and they never looked back. Gabrielle Hawkins then had seven straight to put the Vikings up 17-4, and Parker put the game away with seven more points to give Miami East the win 25-6.

Bethel came out in game three and stood their ground, forcing five ties early and an 8-8 game. Alaina Hawthorn was strong at the net, but it wasn’t enough to slow down the Vikings. Six points from Katelyn Mack put the visitors up 19-11, and despite a scrappy finish for the Bees, they lost the third game 25-15.

*Earlier in the week, the Bees defeated conference foe National Trail in four games. Hawthorn led the Bees with 12 kills, while Lowery added nine.

Junior Jackie Ontiveros dished out 24 assists in the match for the Bees, while Sarah Swisher contributed five aces.

First Tournament Win- Bethel won their first tournament game in several years with a 25-18, 17-25, 25-17, 25-15 win over Brookville on Saturday afternoon in the Division Three sectionals held at Brookville.

“I am so proud of the girls, they worked so hard,” said Bethel coach Lauren Siebenaller. “We came up with a gameplan and worked on it all day. We did what we needed to do to win. Were able to come back after the second set and settle down. We had excellent serving from Jackie Ontiveros and Leisa Grumbles today.”

Hawthorn had 11 kills for Bethel and Sarah Swisher added 10.

“Everyone played together and the last two weeks we have four wins,” Siebenaller said. “We are turning the corner at the end.”

Bethel is 5-16 after the win.
