By now, everyone in the Cross County Conference, and for that matter everyone in the Dayton area, knows about Caleb South.

The quick, multi-dimensional guard led the Bees to the district finals last weekend, where they fell to Purcell Marian and was eliminated from the state tournament.

But South showed all year that he is continuing to improve. He can get to the hoop with ease, and will force the defenders to come out on him with three-point range.

The sophomore has seen his hard work pay off, as he was honored last week by the coaches in the Cross County Conference as a first-team player.

South was joined on the first-team by Jordan Maschino (Covington), Zach Hyre (Franklin Monroe), Damien Mackesy and Brandon Mack (Miami East), Devan Rinderle (MIssissinawa Valley), Brock Jamison (Newton), Jacob Bassler (Twin Valley South) and the duo of Gavin Richards and Tyler VanWinkle of Tri-Village. Mackesy was also named the Player of the Year.

While none of the Bees were second team, Bethel’s Tyler Terry was honored as a special mention player.

Bethel finished fourth overall in the league with a 9-4 conference record, placing behind Tri-Village and Miami East (both 11-1) and Mississinawa Valley (9-3).

Bethel’s girls basketball team won ten games for the first time in several years, and finished with an even 6-6 record in the league. They placed seventh overall behind the league champions from Tri-Village (12-0).

Tri-Village and Covington each had three players named to the first-team all-conference team. Allie Downing earned Player of the Year, and was joined by Shelbey Dowler and Danika Mann.

Also on the first-team was Stevie Johnting of Arcanum, Jessie Crowell, Brooke Gostomsky and Samantha Whiteman all from Covington, Morgan Haney and Haley Howard from Miami East, and Madison Mollette from Newton.

Bethel placed 6-foot-1 sophomore Alaina Hawthorn on the second-team, as she progressed all season long, and developed into one of the top post players in the conference. She broke the 20-point mark late in the year against Brookville.

Another member of the Bees was honored on the special mention team, as sophomore Kayla Grable earned that honor. Grable is a multi-sport athlete who used her speed and athleticism to be a defense force for the Bees.
