Dayton Christian hosted the Bethel Bees in West Carrollton Friday night. Bethel triumphed with a 21-10 victory over the Warriors. After a strong first quarter Bethel slowed down and allowed Dayton Christian to take a strong lead, but Bethel came back and dominated the fourth quarter, securing victory.

Bethel head coach Scott Clodfelter said of Friday’s game, “It was a really, really good win for us.” He continued, “Late in the third quarter, we’re down and in the past we had a little bit of trouble coming back. I think the second year in the program the kids are starting to develop some toughness and we showed that in the fourth quarter. We played very well in the fourth quarter, and we showed that we wanted to win more.”

“Defense made some great stops when we had to in the fourth quarter,” Clodfelter went on, “and then Wills took over there late.”

The Wills Coach Clodfelter is talking about is QB Josh Wills, who has really stepped up to become a leader on the field. Josh Wills is a quarterback who isn’t afraid to run the ball in himself - which he does frequently - if he thinks that’s the right tactical decision to make. Wills doesn’t hesitate in making the decision to run or pass, like in the first seconds of the fourth quarter when Wills ran the ball in from the three yard line scoring the touchdown that gave the Bees their first lead of the game. They would not fall behind again.

The game was not always in the Bees’ favor. After ending the first quarter with a 7-7 tie, the second quarter was mostly a stale mate. After an incredible Bethel interception, the ball was once again turned over to Dayton Christian when Warrior Chris Bombs recovered a Bethel fumble.

Dayton Christian made a valiant effort to drive the ball downfield, but there was a major upset when – after a 26 yard touchdown run in the second quarter – a penalty resulted in that touchdown being declared invalid. Dayton Christian was not able to make it back in the endzone and the tie held steady throughout the end of the first half.

The stalemate continued much into the third quarter, with control of the ball bouncing back and forth from Warriors to Bees and back again. The Warriors were finally able to break the stalemate, not with a touchdown but with a 26 yard field goal giving the Warriors a three point lead. Despite every effort from the hive, the Warriors were able to hold on to that lead with Bethel running out of time in the third quarter at the three yard line.

The final quarter was much more in the Bees’ favor. Joshua Wills brought the team the lead, and they were able to maintain it, stopping the Warriors at every turn. Again Wills ran the ball in, scoring a second touchdown in the final minutes of the game. Like a team possessed with an unstoppable drive to win, the Bess followed up their last touchdown by recovering their own kick and regaining control of the ball.

With less than a minute in the second half, Jacob Evans took a knee, running out the clock and securing the Bees’ victory.
