Photo Jan 16 12 24 00 PMTecumseh wanted to make a statement on Saturday, as they participated in the nation’s top in-season high school girls basketball tournament knows simply as the Classic in the Country.

They didn’t just make a statement around Ohio… they sent shock waves through the Buckeye State.

The Arrows used an 18-point run in the opening quarter to set the tone, and never looked back as they dominated Doylestown Chippewa 70-46 in the event held at Berlin Hiland High School in Amish Country in Northeast Ohio.

Chippewa came into the game 13-0, and was ranked #1 in Ohio in the Division Three state polls. The Arrows used a barrage of eight three-point shots in the opening half, and mixed that with another solid game in the post from Lindsey Nartker in the victory.

Caroline Smith led the Arrows with 17 points including four three’s, while Nartker and freshman Presley Griffitts added 16 apiece, Corinne Thomas added 11 (with three three-point shots) and Danielle Franklin scored ten.

Tecumseh led quickly 5-2 before Chippewa had their lone run of the game, scoring the next ten points to take a 12-5 advantage. After a timeout, the Arrows went to work.

Griffitts started the run with a layup to break the Chippewa run, that began an 18-0 run that vaulted the Arrows into the lead for good.

Smith buried a pair of three-pointers in the run, while Franklin and Thomas also connected from long range during the run, as the Arrows sat in front 23-12 after one period of play.

Smith kept shooting well early in the second period, with two more three’s and Tecumseh led 31-20 with 5:00 left in the half.

Another 8-0 run for the Arrows highlighted by Nartker with six points, giving the Arrows their 39-22 lead late in the half.

Fittingly, Thomas ended the half the way she opened the game with a three, and Tecumseh enjoyed a 42-24 lead at the half.

While Chippewa could never make another run, the Arrows put together a quick 6-0 run midway through the third period, thanks to all six points from Griffitts, taking the Arrows out to a 52-27 lead with three minutes left in the third period.

Griffitts scored ten points in the third quarter as the Arrows led by 24 heading to the fourth.

In addition to the dominant win, the Arrows outrebounded Chippewa 40-15.

*Also last week, the Arrows lost to Kenton Ridge in a huge CBC contest 81-76, dropping the Arrows into a first-place tie with Tippecanoe each with one league loss.

The Arrows host Northwestern tonight at 7:30, then travel to Tippecanoe on Saturday night.
