The Bethel boys’ soccer team knew exactly what they were up against on Saturday night, as the state-ranked Dayton Christian Warriors came to town. The teams combined for 11 goals in the game, as Dayton Christian edged the Bees 6-5.

“They are a very good offensive team, and we devised our plans on what we wanted to do defensively and in the first half, I thought we did a good job with that,” Bethel coach Bob Hamlin said. “They made some adjustments and started making some plays.”

Bethel scored first when Korry Hamlin scored off of the keeper to give the Bees a 1-0 lead at the 28:32 mark of the first half. Five minutes later, the Warriors tied the game and shortly after took the lead.

The Bees tied the game up before the half when Evan Hawthorn put the ball in net, sending the game to the half 2-2.

Dayton Christian scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 4-2 lead.

“Our kids got 4-2 in the second half, and we just started to plug away, and I think they worked hard and made some things happen.”

“We played this summer and got ourselves down before coming back to tie or win, so I know in their mind they thought they could do that. This is a good group of kids.”

Bethel battled back and scored at the 14:24 mark when Zach Cohee scored off an assist from Hawthorn, but just that quick, the Warriors regained their two goal lead.

Hawthorn scored for the Bees with 8:41 left, and Tyler Brueckman wrapped up the scoring with just over a minute left to close the gap to 6-5.

*Bethel also tied Newton 1-1 last week, as Cohee scored the lone Bethel goal.

“That was an even match, and Newton came out in the beginning and controlled the tempo and pace,” Hamlin said. “”They were very aggressive and put a great deal of pressure on us in the middle.”

With about 12 minutes left in the half, Brueckman slotted a ball from the right to left for Cohee, who put the ball in left footed just past the keeper.

After Newton tied the game early in the second half, the action was fast and furious according to Hamlin.

Bethel returns to action tomorrow night at Tri County North at 5:30.
