Park Layne Elementary earned the Silver Award in the 2014-2015 Breakfast All-Star Awards by the Ohio School Breakfast Challenge during the Ohio Schools Board Association 2015 Annual Capital Conference on Nov. 9-10.
The Tecumseh school is among 170 honorees selected for this recognition.
The Ohio School Breakfast Challenge, launched during the 2014-15 school year, challenged schools to increase their School Breakfast Program participation so that all students have the opportunity to start each day ready to learn.
“For students to do their best in school, it’s important that they are ready to learn and that includes starting the day with a nutritious breakfast,” said Tecumseh Local Schools Superintendent Mr. Norm Glismann. “We are very pleased to have our commitment to helping our students succeed recognized with this honor.”
The Tecumseh Child Nutrition Program started offering Universal School Breakfast five years ago after recognizing that only about 10 percent of students were eating breakfast.
“Through lots of hard work department-wide, we are now reaching almost 60 percent of our students across the district, with Park Layne leading the way,” said Ms. Stacy Reynolds, Food Service Director.
Universal School Breakfast is a USDA-funded nutrition program that reimburses districts that offer free breakfast to all students. The program is available to districts with a significant number of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch and breakfast.
Research shows that Universal School Breakfast significantly increases participation of qualifying students by eliminating the stigma of eating breakfast at school, according to the Food Research and Action Center.

PieTop sellers in the Tecumseh Elementary Schools’ pie fundraiser won the chance to put a pie in the face of a staff member of their choice.  Mrs. Randenburg, Mrs. Hampshire, and Mrs. B. Moore were the targets of Ashley Reed, Parker Jackson, TJ Moore, and Perry Jackson, pie selling winners at New Carlisle Elementary.  PTO mom and unsuspecting photographer Natalie Jackson was caught in the middle when her son “surprised” her with a pie too!
