Michael Timko, longtime resident of New Carlisle, passed away this past week at the Thomas-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore, KY at the age of 96.

Born in Cleveland in 1920 he grew up in Mingo Junction OH with older brother John and younger sister Helen [Kochar] Harris. He served nearly 4 years in the US Army in Europe and upon returning home married his sweetheart Martha Thompson of Steubenville, OH in Feb 1946. Daughter Cynthia Sue was born in 1947 and Michael Robert in 1948.

The family moved to New Carlisle where he worked with his brother-in-law James Harris at the Harris Corner Store. 1954 brought daughter Christine Anne and the purchase of the business renaming it Timko Corner Store.

He was very active in the community as President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Tecumseh Toastmasters. He served on the Village Board of Public Affairs as well as 11 years with the New Carlisle Volunteer Fire Department. He was a choir member and served on the Board of Deacons as well as an Elder for the Honey Creek Presbyterian Church. From 1966 until retirement in 1982 he served as Manager of the New Carlisle Savings & Loan, now known as the New Carlisle Federal Savings Bank. He always enjoyed traveling with family, learning about and visiting new places. It could be a family road trip to Florida or Disneyland, or to Nova Scotia to see a total solar eclipse.

After retirement he and Martha continued traveling, meeting new people and making new friends, traveling to New Zealand, cruising in Alaska, railroad trip across Canada, and meeting distant relatives in Europe.

After Martha’s passing in 2004, he moved to Wilmore, KY to be near daughter Chris and her family, husband Javi, and grandchildren Jordi and Amaya. He lived the last few years at the Thomas-Hood Veterans Center sharing stories and experiences with other veterans until his passing on Sept 30.
