Springfield-Clark Technology Center (CTC) students traveled to Columbus, Ohio from April 11-12 to participate in the Skills USA State Conference at the Columbus Convention Center. They were part of the CTC’s 45 students who joined nearly 4000 other Skills USA student members, advisors, parents and industry partners from all over Ohio attending the conference.

Skills USA is a national organization for career technical students training for career in trade, industrial, technical and health related occupations. A total of 34 CTC students competed in various skill and leadership competitions. Most students competing were first required to place in the top three of their contest at the Southwest Regional Competitions held in March.

Students from Greenon, Northwestern, and Tecumseh High Schools won top honors at the State Conference.

Students placing in the top three in the state of Ohio received medals at the State Conference. Students placing first will represent Ohio in Skills USA’s National Conference in Louisville, Kentucky between June 19-24, 2017.

Greenon Senior, Kierstyn Avery, is enrolled in the CTC’s EMT Program. Avery won third place in Skills USA’s State Basic Health Care competition.

Northwestern Senior, Cheyenne Cooper, is enrolled in the CTC’s EMT program. Cooper joined teammates, Alaina Blevins and Kayla Rigsby (Southeastern H.S.), and Joseph Kelly (Shawnee) in placing third in Skills USA’s State Health Knowledge Bowl Team competition.

The following Tecumseh High School students won State honors as well:

Brooke Zimmerman (Senior) is enrolled in the Dental Assisting Program. Zimmerman placed third in the Dental Assisting competition.

Chris Mastin (Senior) is enrolled in the Computer Aided Drafting & Design program. She placed first in the Architectural Design competition and will represent the State of Ohio at the Skills USA National Conference.

Macalah Schuyler (Senior) is enrolled in the EMT Program. Schuyler placed second in the First Aid/CPR competition.

Kara Hor (Junior) is enrolled in the Engineering/CNC Program. She placed first in the Extemporaneous Speaking Competition and will represent the State of Ohio at the Skills USA National Conference.

Other CTC students from Clark County also won State awards and honors.

Junior Jenna Fitch (Shawnee) was elected the Skills USA State Secretary for the 2017/18 school year. As the State Secretary Jenna will help lead the State Skills USA chapter and assist with all state events and conferences. Fitch is enrolled in the Dental Assisting Program.

Madaline McCleary (Springfield H.S.) took first place in the Medical Assisting competition; Dan Cleary (Springfield H.S.) took first place in the Industrial Motor Controls competition.

Michael Rice, the CTC’s Associate Schools Coordinator, says the Springfield-Clark CTC also won the Skills USA’s “Quality Chapter Award” in recognition of the school’s exceptional leadership in Skills USA and its involvement in all state-sponsored activities.
