For Hannah Peck, her senior year could not have ended any better.

The talented swimmer who advanced to the districts this season received another honor last week, as she was named to the Academic All-American team for high school swimmers.

The honor is only bestowed upon two percent of the high school swimmers in the country that number 340,000. The National High School Coaches Association presents this award to selected swimmers with a 3.5 GPA or higher, provide good leadership and are honored as a first or second team all-league swimmer.

“It feels really great because I try really hard with my academics,” Peck said. “My freshman year I had 12 practices per week which was eight miles a day for me swimming, and somehow I managed to keep straight A’s.”

“It has been a lot of hard work and it feels great to see it pay off.”

Peck has a weighted GPA of 4.024 which places her eighth in her class at Tecumseh.

“It is awesome to represent Tecumseh,” she added, stating she will have a picture and plaque at the high school.

“My season was really good this year,” she said. “The season usually starts off slow since you are trying to get back into the swing of things and toward the end you pick up speed and drop time. Having swam for 12 years, it is really hard to get my personal best anymore, so halfway through the season, I dropped to under one minute in the 100 Free which is great because I didn’t think I would get there.”

Peck also dropped three seconds off of her time in the 200 Free to get down to 2:06 which took her to districts.

Both at sectionals and districts, Peck swam the first half of her 200 in under one minute, which was really good for her.

“I cut more time at districts to get down to my personal best,” Peck said, stating the competition compared from sectionals to districts was incredible.

“In sectionals, I was seeded first in the 200, then when I got to districts I was seeded 33 out of 34,” she said. “It is a major thing to look at your competition. I was seeded 33rd with a time of 2:06, and the girl seeded 32nd was at 2:01.”

Peck is tentatively planning to attend Youngstown State to study nursing. She also is a lifeguard at the New Carlisle Fitness Center, and has coached the community swim team.
