Former New Carlisle Mayor Charles Keller passed away last week at the age of 92. Keller served the City of New Carlisle as Mayor three times for a total of 11 years.
Dave McWhorter of the New Carlisle Historical Society said he had the pleasure of meeting Keller a week before his death, and conducted an interview with him. McWhorter said he learned that Keller was the last mayor “to be elected by the people,” telling him that currently, mayors are appointed by members of council.
Keller also told McWhorter that he started Little League Baseball in the city, and acted at the President of the Jaycees for a time. McWhorter said Keller served as mayor during the 1960s and early 1970s, noting that Keller was mayor when the city celebrated its 150th anniversary.
A celebration of Keller’s life will be held Thursday, February 12 at the First United Methodist Church in New Carlisle at 11 am.
