Students in Tecumseh’s Multiple Disability classroom are collecting plastic bottle caps. They then take the caps to a company in Indiana who turns them into benches.

“It takes about 400 pounds of bottle caps to make one bench,” said Tecumseh Assistant Superintendent Paula Crew. “Everywhere I go in town, somebody will throw a bag of caps at me and say ‘Here you go.’”

The classroom had to pay $125 to have the caps converted into a bench that’s worth $1200. The bench has a lifespan of about 25 years.

The first bench will be placed in front of Tecumseh High School with a plaque recognizing the Multiple Disability classroom. “We’re trying to get one for every school,” said Crew.

She said it takes quite a few trash bags full of bottle caps to make 400 pounds.

If you would like to provide bottle caps, you can drop them off at the high school or the Board office. “We have about 4 or 5 people a week bringing in bags of bottle caps,” said Crew.

They must be hard plastic bottle caps. “The soft plastic bottles will not do,” she said.
