DSC 2829Public invited to free Christmas meal next month

Park Layne’s Good Shepherd United Methodist Church held its annual free Thanksgiving meal last Thursday, November 19. The church basement, remodeled earlier this year after the 2014 flood, was packed with residents who came out for a savory hot meal shared among the company of their neighbors.

Mike Smith and Mary Spitler cooked and served the food for Thursday’s dinner, which was paid for using church funds. They said that this is at least the fifth year for Good Shepherd’s free Thanksgiving meal, and although the church serves up free community dinners each month, their two winter holiday meals usually draw the biggest crowds.

Smith and Spitler said they served about 80 people at last Thursday’s Thanksgiving meal, running out of food about 45 minutes after the dinner started. Guests were treated to generous helpings of sliced turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and dinner rolls, which was topped off by a hearty slice of pecan pie.

Church members extended an invitation to the public to attend their Christmas meal, which will be held Thursday, December 17 at 6 p.m. Smith said that Community Market donated the hams for last year’s Christmas dinner, and hopes that they will do so again.

Good Shepherd United Methodist Church is located at 1520 Styer Drive in Park Layne, and the community meals are held in the basement.
