Before the doors opened at Noon, families were lined up to be able to adopt a dog or cat for just $10. Normally the dogs are $100 and cats are $30. There is also a $20 charge for each dog license that is paid to Clark County.

One of the lucky dogs to go home on Saturday was Girlie. She was one of the dogs who were released to the Humane Society following reports of pets being left in a condemned house in New Carlisle recently. The two cats are still available for adoption as of Saturday evening. The Humane Society believes in education for pet owners who find that they are involved in a difficult situation and Girlie is an example of how a released pet can be moved to a new forever home.

The event was described by Shelter Coordinator Krissi Hawke as “an amazing day for adoptions”. She thanked the staff and volunteers for working “super hard” in completing paper work, cleaning and even baking cookies for the special adoption event.

Sixteen dogs found homes on Saturday and eight cats were adopted. One of the best stories of the day was the adoption of Nala, a beautiful pity who went home with a local couple. Volunteers rarely get to hear how things went following an adoption, but Nala’s new family shared that she rode well in the car and even waited to get out until she was called. “She went straight to the bath tub and climbed in for her bath” reported her new owner. By later in the evening, new dad and Nala were sacked out on the couch for some “cuddle” time. This is the kind of story you wait to hear if you are a shelter employee or a volunteer who helps with adoptions.

During the event a local resident walked in with a dog she found on her front porch. When the pooch came through the doors, everyone recognized her. The best part of the story was that she wandered away from her new home because she was recently adopted. A scan of her area quickly returned her to the home because all of the dogs from the shelter are now microchipped. Before the dogs leave the shelter, the new family registers their information with the 24 hour pet system.

The next big event for the Humane Society will be a Black Friday adoption event that begins at 11 am and ends at 1 pm at the shelter. You can find adoptable pets on their Facebook page. The shelter was close to being cleared of all adoptable dogs, but there are more waiting for homes once they are spayed or neutered. Special thanks to Maggie Stack from Northside Vet Clinic for working incredibly hard to have as many animals available for adoption on Saturday with the spay and neuter program for the shelter.

If you are not in the market for a new pet, but would like to support the Humane Society, Pawlished Pet Grooming & Boutique in Mad River Township will be collecting dry dog and cat food along with soft treats and rawhides for the training program until November 23rd. The staff has collected 53 items in their challenge to the community for 60 but hopes are of reaching well over that goal this year.
