Several local students will move on to the next round of Ohio’s seventh and eighth grade writing competition.

The Power of the Pen’s first round was Dec. 16 at Clark State Community College.

The competition, which brought together students from Clark and Madison counties, had 203 contestants from 18 schools.

The students who qualified will continue on in the competition at regionals March 7 at Wittenberg University in Springfield. The final round will be May 21-22 at the College of Wooster.

“Students compete in three 40-minute rounds,” said Frank Merrill, Power of the Pen executive director. During the competitions, students compete in rounds with six other students. The students are given writing prompts they have not seen before and have 30-40 minutes to write a story. Students are given points for ranking among the group and points for quality. Stories are handwritten.

From Greenon Jr./Sr. High School, Izzy Fredrick, Calvin Wise, Haven Davis, Arizona Henderson, Andrew Conover, Makenna Juergens, Emily McIntosh and Caitlin Ellis will go to regionals. From Northwestern Jr./Sr. High School, Kat Lee, Haylee Flatt, Rebecca Patch, Alex Smith, Joy Kruse, Alex Johnson, Olivia Lawrence and Mikaela Peoples will move on. Ava Ehlinger, Jillian Sarihan, Savannah Smith, Christian Hunt, Mackenzie Drews, Isabelle Prenatt and Rachel Schoades from Tecumseh Middle School will compete at Wittenberg.

For the district competition, each school could bring a team of six seventh graders and six eighth graders.

For the seventh graders, Lee Kat from Northwestern placed 4th, Allex Smith from Northwestern placed 12th, Izzy Frederick from Greenon placed 13th and Micaela Peoples from Northwestern placed 14th.

For the eight graders, Andrew Conover from Greenon placed 1st. Caitlin Eillis placed 3rd and Makenna Juergens placed 4th, both from Greenon.

Northwestern earned 1st place for the seventh grade team results. Greenon placed 2nd for the eighth grade team results. Lee Kat from Northwestern also earned best of round for seventh graders in Round 3.
