The Northwestern Local School District school board elected new officials at its January board meeting.

Richard Birt, a 2009 Northwestern graduate will serve as the board president. Birt has been on the board since 2010. Gene Pencil was the previous year’s president.

Pam Marton will serve as the board’s vice president.

The January board meeting was combined with the annual tax and organizational meeting on Jan. 12.

The board also decided who would serve in some other specific roles. Donna Myers will be the legislative liaison. Gene Pencil is the conference delegate with Pam Marton as his alternate. Russ Steele is the student achievement liaison and Rick Birt will also serve as the board policy development representative.

In other school board news, the elementary principal Cynthia Pierson’s resignation was approved effective June 30.

“As far as a facilities update, we continue to await the finalization for the flooring replacement and the road widening,” said Tony Orr, superintendent. “We have begun the process to consider additional parking at the elementary. These projects, including the additional parking if approved, will be completed in early summer tentatively.”

The next board meeting is Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. at the elementary library. Meetings for the rest of the year will be held at the same time and place on March 19, April 16, May 21, June 18, July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17.
