Several presentations were received by the Northwestern Board of Education, last Thursday.

Among the presenters were the Northwestern art teachers, Ellie Evans and Elizabeth Hilgenberg, who oversaw the Junior High/High School students who qualified for the Midwestern Artsonia Artcompetition. The competition is exclusive, and only 25% of entries were selected for showing at the event. Among the other Northwestern students whose artwork received notoriety at the event, 9th grader Kyndall Jones won artist of the week with over 1500 votes from other participants.

Artsonia, an organization sponsoring the competition, offers an online art portfolio for all students associated with the even. On top of the online format that they arrange for all of their competitors, the Artsonia organization provides details of students’ work to their parents, and tracks the progress that Junior High/High School students make throughout their school careers. The Artsonia website also allows for students across Midwestern America to comment and collaborate together.

On October 7th, the Northwestern art club participated in the “Chalktoberfest” competition in downtown Springfield, receiving 2nd place overall. The Northwestern students of various ages designed two squares of cement sidewalk alongside other competitors. It’s estimated that the Northwestern students spent up to six hours designing their sidewalk squares.

As of now, 33 students are signed up for the after-school art club, and 26 students have enrolled into a college-credit clay-designing class.

Jake Parks, the student body president for Northwestern High, came to draw attention to the High School’s “Safe Driving Month” of December, as well as the 2nd Harvest Food Drive the school will be participating in.

Northwestern High will be sponsoring a Senior Dinner Night from the Northwestern School Association of Employees. The dinner will be held in honor of the Northwestern district’s senior citizens on December 7th at 6:00 PM.

Other news from the board includes the resignation of Dave Bollheimer as school treasurer, effective of December 31st. The entirety of the board expressed their gratitude to Mr. Bollheimer’s years of service to the school. Although Mr. Bollheimer will be leaving the school board, Mrs. Lee Taylor will be taking his place on the board.

The next Northwestern board meeting will be on December 21st at 6:00 PM.
