A look at Northwestern Local Schools district’s upcoming levy renewals, the election of new school board officers, and plans for the cemetery sitting on the Northwestern schools’ campus were topics discussed at the latest school board meeting, held on October 15 in Northwestern elementary school’s library.

According to Northwestern Local Schools Treasurer, Mr. David Bollheimer, voter approval of Northwestern Local Schools’ upcoming levy renewals will help the district continue meeting its current and forecasted budget needs for the next five years. District Superintendent, Mr. Jesse Steiner, reminded school board members and those in attendance that the approval of the two levy renewals will keep taxes at their current rate and allow the district to continue meeting its students’ academic needs. Community members can get more information and ask questions about the levy requests online at supportnorthwestern.org.

Due to the recent resignation of school board member Mr. Richard Birt, an election of a new school board president and vice-president took place.  Board members unanimously elected Mrs. Pamela Marton into the office of school board president and Mr. Russ Steele as school board vice-president. Both members immediately presumed the duties of their offices.

Mr. Steiner gave an update on plans for the inactive cemetery sitting on school grounds. According to Steiner, the cemetery presents a safety issue for students. However, research indicates the cemetery does not occupy land owned by the school district so the district does not have jurisdiction regarding what can be done with it. Steiner reported that communication about the district’s concerns has been opened with the cemetery’s owner and an update will be presented at the next regular school board meeting.

Other business included the approval of Ms. Vicki Packard-Cooper as Northwestern’s volunteer soccer coach and a presentation by Art teacher, Ms. Elizabeth Evans, and her student, Tori Hager.  Jr. / Sr. high school Principal, Ms. Lori Swafford, also presented school news and a school event calendar to board members.

A special, “workshop-style” meeting of school board to create a policy manual will take place in the Board’s conference room on November 4, 2015 at 5:30 pm. The next regular School Board meeting will take place in the elementary school’s library at 6:00 pm on November 19, 2015. The public is invited to take part in these events.
