Paola Villegos-Mendoza and Macalah Schuyler were introduced to the New Carlisle Rotary Club on Tuesday, November 29th as the Rotary Citizen and Student of the Month. Schuyler is a student at the Springfield-Clark Career Technology Center (SCCTC).

Macalah Schuyler, daughter of Jeremy and Karen Schuyler, is studying to become a certified EMT. Her classes at SCCTC include EMT, chemistry, government, English, and STNA/Nurses’ Aide. With a GPA of 3.632, she has earned a Tech Prep scholarship to attend either Clark State or Sinclair.

Schuyler is involved in extra-curricular activities at both Tecumseh and CTC. She is a varsity basketball cheerleader, a member of the marching and pep bands, and has participated in the musical. She is a CTC tour guide, the local historian for Skills USA, on the editorial team for a student arts journal, and a member of H2O (Help to Others). Macalah also works part-time at Rancher’s Roast Beef in New Carlisle.

Community service projects in which Schuyler has participated include raising money for several charitable causes and collecting food and clothing for the needy through H2O, fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association through Skills USA, and volunteering for Heart Support, an organization that seeks to help others navigate life’s struggles.

A favorite high school memory is performing with the marching band and qualifying for state competition. Schuyler wished to recognize her EMT instructor Mrs. Harwood for encouraging her to never give up on her goals.

Sophomore Paola Villegos-Mendoza is the Rotary Citizen of the Month. According to Principal Ivan Gehret, Paola is polite, respectful, and helpful. “She is always willing to help others with translation issues,” said Gehret.

“I like to help out my classmates especially the ones who need bilingual support,” said Villegos-Mendoza. “I know it’s tough coming to the United States knowing no English.”

Villegos-Mendoza lives with her parents and two siblings. She credits her parents for inspiring her to work hard because they work so hard providing for their family making sure they have everything they need.

She plans to attend SCCTC and study in the health care field.
