Fire Chief Steve Trusty told City Council that he has hired nine more employees for the Fire Department, 7 of whom are from the local area.

“When you came on as chief, one of the things we stressed was staffing,” said Council member Bill McIntire. “This is the most we’ve had in any month.”

Trusty said it is the result of efforts by the entire department, not just him.

Trusty also announced that the department received a $3200 grant that must be spent by next June. He will be apply it toward his savings for a Lucas Device that performs CPR. The price tag for the device is around $13,000.

City Finance Director Colleen Harris reported that in June, the city spent over $335,000 more than it received. “We had a lot of big expenses that month,” she said, citing two loan payments, audit expenses and attorney fees. She also said that the check was written for the Edgebrook overlay project in June.

Harris also reported that so far this year, the pool is operating with a $7,000 profit. “Not all of the expenses have come in yet,” she said.

Police Administrator Ralph Underwood reported that Deputy Sheila Crews has returned to duty and that she and Deputy Rachel Allender have been patrolling on bicycles. “Feel free to stop them and talk about crime in your area,” said Underwood.

McIntire commended Underwood and the city deputies for their service to the community, especially since the mood elsewhere in the country is not favorable to police. He asked Underwood to explain the best way to conduct yourself in a traffic stop.

“We need to see your hands,” said Underwood. “Best thing to do is put your hands on the steering wheel. If you have a weapon in the vehicle, you are required to tell the deputy.” He also said that moving around in the vehicle arouses suspicion.

In his report to council, Underwood noted that there was one juvenile arrest in June. “That was fun,” he said. “A juvenile decided to moon one of our deputies.”

“He was incarcerated.”

The next meeting of the New Carlisle City council will be on Monday, August 1 at 7:00 p.m. at the Smith Park Shelter House. The public is invited to attend.
