Some of us from the New Carlisle Community Garden decided that since last Saturday was Salsa Day at the Farmers’ Market, we would have a competition with different salsas. 3 Of us were each going to make a salsa and a guacamole. Life happened and instead of 3 salsas and 3 Guacamoles, we had a Salsa Verde, a Fresh Salsa (Pico de Gallo), and a Guacamole. All were hits and we had numerous requests for recipes. (See below) People also asked about the source of the chips. They were purchased at Las Condesa #2 Grocery Store.

Salsa Verde

(Clarissa Montoya)
  • Tomatillos with husks removed
  • Garlic
  • Serrano peppers
  • Salt
Instructions: Add the ingredients to a blender. Amounts according to taste.

Pico de Gallo

(Linda Eggleston Nowakowski)
  • 3 Large tomatoes seeded and diced
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 1 Serrano seeded and finely chopped
  • Lime juice to taste
  • Salt to taste
Mix together. If the salsa needs more heat, add some of the seeds from the Serrano

Guacamole

(Linda Nowakowski)
  • 2 Ripe avocados
  • 1 Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Serrano. finely chopped
  • 1 Clove garlic, finely chopped
  • Lime juice to taste
  • Salt to taste.
  • Some chopped tomato that has been seeded
Mash avocado, onion, and garlic together. Thin with lime juice to taste. Add chopped tomato. If you are making it in advance, put an avocado seed in the bowl and cover with plastic wrap laid on the surface. The seed will help slow the avocado from darkening. Seeds from the pepper can be added if you desire more heat.)
