As a kid I passed Belle Manor Nursing Home on my way to church each Sunday morning. Thinking it was full of old people and ghosts. I vowed to never go there. When my best friend from elementary school asked me to visit the building I shuttered and refused.

But then life happened and I find myself living in where else? Belle Manor! The residents are interesting and many are involved in activities. I ‘ve never heard the words “I love you” so often. It’s like a family here. I have new grandparents, brothers and sisters here. And my folks (Jean and Rose) Marie Keck live a block away!

The staff is world class. At least one of whom gets up at 4:30 in the morning to get to work. Another has suffered numerous broken bones, the most recent being her shoulder. Yet she comes back to work as soon she can and as many other aides say “I love helping people.”

And yet this is a very challenging job. Sometimes residents are scared enough to spit, bite and hit in their fear and confusion. But the staff takes it in stride, continuing to care with tender loving care while honoring the dignity of the residents. It all wraps up as love in a nursing home.
