Those are the words of Father Thomas Nevels, pastor of Sacred Heart Church when questioned about the tragic shootings and killings last week. We all know that the majority of law enforcement is in that business to protect everyone—that does not justify the actions of the bad ones, but it does tell us that we have to hold up all of the ideals and keep all of our officers and firefighters and all who keep the communities safe not only in our prayers but give them a salute for what they do.

When Family and Youth Initiatives (FYI) started planning Safety Day 8 months ago, the goal was to have a day in which families and especially youth would be able to meet and get to know law enforcement personally as well as officers enforcing the law. With all the strife these past few months, the goal has changed and SAFETY DAY 2016 will be a coming together by the community to thank the officers for being there for the whole community. For keeping us safe, for catching and prosecuting the drug dealers, for helping victims of domestic abuse, for helping the schools to be safe, and for just helping all the families in our community.

ALSO NEW this year will be relay races, bike races, and TUG-O-WAR games for kids and adults of all ages. And competition between law enforcement and others will be the highlight of the day!!

THUS, FYI invites the public of all ages to come and be part of the celebration of life and saluting all our men and women who keep us safe. Whether they be police, fire, or FBI people, they put themselves in harm’s way so often to keep us protected. On August 11, when people come to SAFETY DAY, from 4 – 7pm at Tecumseh High School, 9830 W. National Road, New Carlisle, they will find over 30 vendors that showcase some healthy or safe issue and how to make it positive and healthy. From WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) who specialize in baby wellness, to United Senior Citizens to HardAcre Farm for some of our most vulnerable citizens, the variety of vendors is numerous and each has an emphasis on concern for the community.

TO MAKE THIS SUCCESSFUL, FYI would invite those who booths would fit in to call and schedule a booth. For those promoting safety are free of charge. If you have a child, teen, or adult who would like to enter any of the races, please call and get more information. And if you are in the Safety Field, please call and give us your name so we can honor you and your family that evening. The number to call is 845-0403 and leave a message if no one is there.

FYI is also seeking clergy of all faiths to stand in prayer with each other for all of our families and our law enforcement offices. To help with that please call Dave at 849-9140 and leave your name, phone number and church name.

FYI is also seeking donations to be able to give away bookbags, bike helmets, and first aid kits for many of the people who come. Also finances are needed to honor all the people who keep us safe. All donations can be sent to FYI, 468 N Dayton Lakeview Rd., New Carlisle 45344 or if material supplies, can be brought to the office. Security National Bank is also collecting school supplies for the event.

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR AUGUST 11 AND MAKE THIS AN AFTERNOON YOU DO NOT MISS AS WE HONOR ALL THOSE “ FACES BEHIND THE BADGES!!!”
