This is a wonderful time, right smack in the middle of the winter; to sit down by the fire or somewhere warm, pick up a gardening book or seed catalog and start dreaming about what to plant this spring. Use this time to start thinking about that trouble spot or the area where you want more color and take a look see, what ideas you can find in these references. Gurney Seed Co.  http://www.gurneys.com; Burpee Seed Co., http://www.burpee.com; the Park Seed Co.   http://www.parkseed.com for starters. These catalogs are for ideas only, do your purchasing locally, as you will find a better value with locally grown, ready for planting flowers and vegetables than you will from the mail order houses.

Come and walk around in the greenhouses and see all the “green”, absorb some sun in the warm temperatures. Bring a book, if you like, and sit on a bench and read for a while, the coffee is always on.

Another idea for shaking off the winter is to go to the local home and garden shows. The first one is right here in Clark Co., the 2015 Clark county Home & Garden Show, February 14 and 15 at the Hollenbeck Bayley Conference Center near the Kuss Auditorium in Springfield. The Dayton Home and Garden Show, March 20-22, 2015 at the Dayton Convention Center is always full of great ideas. Both of these shows will feature local businesses with blooming plants to get your creative juices flowing.

Get ready to plant some of the early blooming plants. One plant everyone should have is the Helleborus or the Lenten Rose for early spring color. This is a fantastic plant that blooms in late winter. It is hardy to Maine, zone 4 (Ohio is Zone 5/6), is deer proof, drought tolerant and grows/blooms in the shade. It will tolerate heavier soils and prefers generous amounts of organic matter. Another early blooming, frost tolerant plant family are the pansy and viola and don’t forget the primrose. So get ready to start planting the end of March. There is no time to sit idly by, get your ideas solidified, your wish list ready and head out to your garden center and take a look at what is available later this month.
